The global maritime industry continues to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion, and this month, WISTA South Africa shone a spotlight on that progress. In celebration of Women’s Month, WISTA hosted a vibrant gathering in Cape Town, drawing together women leaders, industry professionals, and international partners to reaffirm the essential role of women in the maritime sector.
The event, supported by the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), provided a dynamic platform to celebrate milestones while addressing the challenges that women continue to face in traditionally male-dominated maritime professions.
Women Shaping Africa’s Maritime Future
From shipowners and bunker suppliers to surveyors and compliance experts, women across Africa are redefining what leadership in shipping looks like. WISTA South Africa emphasized that progress is not just symbolic but structural, with more women ascending to decision-making roles in shipping companies, port authorities, and regulatory bodies.
Delegates at the Cape Town event highlighted initiatives to increase training opportunities, mentorship programs, and boardroom representation. “We cannot speak of a sustainable maritime economy without inclusive leadership,” one keynote speaker stressed, capturing the essence of the gathering.

The WISTA Women’s Month event wasn’t just a celebration—it was a call to action. Panel discussions ranged from energy transition in bunkering, to port efficiency and workforce diversity, to compliance in shipping operations. Networking sessions further amplified the voices of women entrepreneurs in bunkering, logistics, crewing, and ship agency services, reinforcing that inclusion is not a token gesture but a proven driver of performance and innovation.
