Steel Cargo Surveys for the Northern Corridor

Expert surveys at the Ports of Mombasa & Lamu for cargo destined for Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, DRC, and South Sudan. We protect your assets along the entire transit corridor.

The Critical Distinction for the Northern Corridor

With long inland transit routes from Mombasa and Lamu, cargo is exposed to unique risks. Differentiating between sea voyage damage and in-transit handling or road transport damage is vital for accurate liability assessment and protecting your investment.

Cosmetic & Climatic Flaws

Often related to climate and remediable without major loss.

  • Uniform surface rust (flash rust) from humidity
  • Minor scratches from standard handling
  • Superficial atmospheric discoloration
  • Dust and residue from road/rail transport

Real Structural Damage

Compromises the steel’s intended use, capacity, or marketability.

  • Deep pitting corrosion from saltwater ingress
  • Buckling or deformation from poor stowage/handling
  • Fractures or cracks from impact
  • Damage from improper inland transit securing

Our Northern Corridor Expertise in Action

Case Study: The Mombasa-Kampala Corridor

Situation: Structural beams destined for Kampala, Uganda, arrived with bending damage. The carrier and receiver disputed whether it occurred at sea, at the Port of Mombasa, or during the 1,100km road journey.

Our Action: We conducted a joint survey in Kampala and cross-referenced our findings with discharge tally reports from our surveyor in Mombasa. The nature of the damage was consistent with improper securing on the truck.

Result: Liability was correctly placed with the inland logistics provider. Our clear, end-to-end evidence trail protected the shipowner and cargo insurer.

Case Study: Juba Inland Transit Damage

Situation: A consignment of steel coils for South Sudan was found to have significant telescoping and edge damage upon arrival in Juba, which was not noted at discharge in Mombasa.

Our Action: Our final destination surveyor in Juba documented the damage. By analyzing the lashing methods and road conditions of the transit route, we determined the damage was a direct result of inadequate securing and stabilization for the long, arduous road journey.

Result: The consignee was able to successfully claim against the road transporter’s insurance, preventing a complex and likely unsuccessful claim against the ocean carrier.
